What has most impressed us about Clean Sweep 3.0 is that Quarterdeck seems to have finally solved the problem of just how safe do you make a program like this. You can set a feature called "safety sweep" pretty much
based on how confident you think you are. Clean Sweep divides the safety of file deletions (on which it relies on a very much expanded knowledge base of products and which can be updated via modem) into three
categories: red, green and yellow. With safety sweep set on, only "green" files can be deleted. Perfect for the novice. "Yellow" files can be deleted if safety sweep is off; red files cannot be removed. Based
on our knowlkedge of these programs, the designations were correct. Clean Sweep 3.0 also offers the ability to monitor installations, recording every file and registry entry or change a program makes. These are
worth looking at when you run into a problem with file associations as well as a pratically fool-proof means of uninstalling programs. Here at Rainbow-PCM, this feature gets a real workout because we load programs in to
evaluate and then delete them quite often. Another enhancement to Clean Sweep is its registry sweep, which detects invalid entries in the Registry files. The registry is a difficult bird to handle and we know
of people who were masters at editing WIN.INI who have just thrown up their hands at the registry. While registry sweep doesn't solve all problems with these files, this is a major innovation. When first
started, the program reads every file on the computer, which does take a bit of time. Once that is done, it reads through your hard disks looking for changes each time it starts. We believe this scan is faster now than it has
been in previous versions and it really isn't a problem at all. In fact, were it not for the browser's cache directory, it would be a snap. That all said the feature we like the best is the application mover.
Say you installed Microsoft Office on drive D: and keep your word processing, spreadsheet, database and presentation files on the same disk. It will not be long before that 500mb disk is getting full while good old drive F: has
tons of empty space. You cannot just copy applications in Windows like you could in DOS: it seems like 80-gazillion different things point to the directory where you installed the program. Move it and spend lots
of time adjusting all sorts of things – from the registry to WIN.INI. With file mover, just tell Clean Sweep where you want the application to go. It handles all the internal chores automatically.
All in all, Clean Sweep 3.0 is a fine utility which will more than pay for itself in saved disk space. With applications taking up more and more space these days, even though hard disks are larger and cheaper,
you really need this program to keep your disks clear of garbage.
