Admit it. Would it be ultra wonderful if you had a program which popped up a window like the one above and then proceeded to create that free space for you without degrading your system in any way, without removing files from your hard disk and without the complicated mish-mash of setting up a compressed disk?
Not only is it wonderful, its available in a program called FreeSpace from Mijenix. What sets FreeSpace apart is you can use the compressed files it stores on your regular hard disk just as
though they were not compressed. No kidding. And what's more, there is no degregation in loading and editing time for these files. I frankly did not believe that when I read the documentation (yes, I do read documentation from
time to time) so I ran a number of tests and it is true. Small files, large files, complicated files (like PageMaker documents) – it simply made no difference. It works. FreeSpace will also analyze your hard
disk to show you what directories can give you the best results from compression. Usually, these are graphics files, but other files types can yield big savings, too. All in all, Mijenix says it can save as much as 60 percent
of the space on your hard disk. That is impressive. In addition, FreeSpace colors the files you have compressed in blue in the Windows Explorer. FreeSpace also
acts as an add-in to the right button menu, so the options the program offers can be performed on any file without actually running the program (which rests happily in the system tray). This is, of course, a real boon and makes
the excellent features of FreeSpace even easier to use. Need some free space. Get FreeSpace. You won't be sorry.'
