If you are doing any designing – the church bulletin, the Lion's Club newsletter, business cards for Uncle Eugene or a web site – you really do owe it to yourself to pick up a copy of Robin Williams' The Non-Designer's Design Book.
This extremely well-done jewel is a combination of hints, tips, examples, design philosophy and even a couple of excercises that really, really will make all the difference in how you lay out anything and how to use type in doing so.
Ms. Williams has divided the book into two major sections: design and typography. She explains general principles and then explains them with examples. You can see in a flash how applying her ideas can make a world of difference in what something looks like and how it attracts people to it.
This is not some fancy-dancy design book. It is just what its title says: for the non-designer. Written in an easy style, Ms. Williams is long on explanation and short on jargon.
Just one thing. The subtitle is misleading. This is not just a book about "Design and Typographic Principles for the Visual Novice," it is an outstanding guide that even professional designers and graphic artists would do well to read and use.
