Ornamatica

Well, gee. One of the things about many page layout and design programs is that when you want to get just a little bit fancy with boxes and borders, you're kind of left hanging out to dry.
For all the great features PageMaker, for example, has for layout and design, its box borders are quite routine. In a mammoth program such as CorelDraw!, there are hundreds of pre-drawn borders on its CD art gallery that can be simply imported and used. But often, "just what I want" isn't there and even though it is vector art, resizing can be a problem.
   Enter JASC's Ornamatica.

You simply select an image from several thousand available, drag that image into the border representation, click a button and, viola, a border!
Well, if that was all you wanted to do, it would be enough. But that is just the beginning of the things Ornamatica can do for you.
As a start, you can specify the size of the border. So, if you want a border 2 inches wide by 5 inches deep, you just tell Ornamatica that is what you want. Then, if you wish, you can tell it how many tiles you want horizontally and vertically. Once you've done this, just drag a graphic into the border, click a button, and you have the border.
But, as everyone knows who has ever done this sort of thing, you may want the corners to be different: different size, different color, rotated, angled, whatever. You can do it with Ornamatica!
I was most impressed with the size and scope of Ornamatica's gallery of images, which can be displayed in a little window all by itself. It is from this window that you drag a graphic onto the border you are creating.
In addition, however, Ornamatica allows you to import your own graphics into the gallery in several formats, including CordelDraw! and as a Windows Metafile.

This means, of course, you are not limited to the 5,000 or so images which come with the program, but can have any of your own as well.
In truth, Ornamatica offers the ultimate in flexibility to your border-making. Since this program arrived, I have used it several dozen times already, always with success. And, in the program to which the border is "going," you can resize your border without distortion in order to make fine adjustments to fit your design.
I am impressed with Ornamatica and you will be, too. You can download a demo from JASC's web site and try it for free for a limited time. This is shareware at its best.
