RegClean: Clean Your Registry For Free
Lots and lots of people are still trying to figure out the Windows 3.x WIN.INI file and now, with WIN95 we have the registry. It is pretty intimidating. At least most of the WIN.INI file was English,
or, at least, used words. The Registry, on the other hand, looks very computer-guru-like, yet it is one of the most important files you have to keep Win95 running smoothly. Every time you install, reinstall or
uninstall a program, so-called "keys" in the Registry are created, modified or updated. Bad things happen to these entries sometimes, and that is even more than case when a program is uninstalled. The uninstall process which
ships with much software has a bad habit of leaving stuff behind. Hey, Microsoft knows this. So they have created a small utility called RegClean, which – as the name implies – cleans up the Registry. The
current version is 4.1. You can download RegClean for free from Microsoft. When you run it, it will create an undo file in the directory into which it is installed (put it in its own directory) with a date-time sequence name so you can keep them straight. If, after cleaning the registry, things are messed up for some reason, just double-click the undo file and the old settings are restored.
