It seems like every time we've run across a replacement for the Windows Explorer, we've given it a whirl. It is just that simple case of wanting something better. Until now,
everything we ran across was either more difficult to use, buggy or no better, really, than what it was written to replace. Until now.
When we received a note that the folks at WinAbility, who produced the outstanding Folder Guard, were out with a replacement for the Explorer, we just had to take a look. And
we're glad we did.
As you can see, the biggest thing
about Singularity is that it has side by side frames. Since the entire metaphor to Singularity is drag-and-drop, you can imagine how easy it is to copy and move files from one place to another. And Singularity is fast, we moved a
dozen image files for this web site from one place to another and didn't even realize it was finished. Singularity jumps from one drive to another with a click, it has a number of
enhancements to its display, including lines a la Excel, as shown here. You would be surprised how much easier it is to keep track of all the details of a file if you have the lines to guide you.
Probably the best feature of Singularity, however, is its history buffer. You can pop back and forth through the directories you have used by just clicking your mouse on
arrows at the top of the display. If that wasn't enough, there is a whole history display – when you want to make "tall leaps in a single bound."
You can also pop up a file tree, edit and find files and, of course, display and sort your files in a variety
of ways. Frankly, Singularity has just about everything you'd want in a file manager/explorer. So much so that I, personally, have changed to using it exclusively. You will, too.
